FemArt – International Festival of Artists and Activists

FemArt – International Festival of Artists and Activists has been organized by Artpolis – Art and Community Center since 2013. Founded by the artist and activist Zana Hoxha, FemArt stands as one of the largest feminist festivals in the Balkans, with a mission to promote art, activism, feminism, peace, freedom, diversity, solidarity, empathy, and empowerment.

Addressing the daily challenges faced by women and marginalized groups in Kosova and the region, the festival seeks to tackle these issues by confronting and challenging the societal norms that perpetuate them across generations. Since 2013, Artpolis has been spearheading this festival as a platform to address and combat these difficulties. This inspiring artistic initiative swiftly evolved into a stage where the voices of artists and activists could be heard, and from its very first edition, it assumed the prestigious status it holds today.

The varied program of the FemArt Festival serves not only as an educational but also an entertaining experience, catering to a broad and diverse audience. These festival editions’ programs have been curated by a collective of artists and civil society activists, each with expertise in different art forms and a strong link between social issues and artistic expressions. This careful selection ensures that the festival offers a well-rounded and enriching experience to its attendees.

The festival has adopted various mottos over the years, such as “We are not an island,” “Fearless,” “Run the Show,” “Freedom vs Shame,” “Solidarity and Resilience,” “F… Sexism,” “From Revolution to Evolution,” and “Burn your Fear.” These mottos have served as both inspiration and guidance for artists and activists, shaping the themes and issues addressed in each year’s edition.

Every year, the festival brings together over 200 artists and activists from around the world, showcasing their unique creations and providing a platform to address timely issues. In addition to these talented individuals, the festival actively involves volunteers, young people representing diverse communities in Kosova. This engagement aims to foster greater youth participation in discussions surrounding the empowerment of women in Kosova and the region, facilitating the exchange of experiences and ideas.

Throughout its history, FemArt has fostered collaborations not only with other festivals like Etno Fest, Hapudemia, Dam Festival, Mural Fest, DokuFest, PrizrenFest but has also extended its reach to various cities, including Ferizaj, Mitrovica, Tirana, Graçanica, among others. In addition, the festival has established partnerships with cultural institutions, donors, media outlets, and local businesses, further expanding its network and impact.
