FemArt 14 opened on a rainy night in Prishtina, but inside Dodona Theatre, every seat was filled. Artists, poets, writers, activists and guests from several embassies gathered as the Artpolis team and volunteers welcomed each person with care. Once again, Zana Hoxha, founder and executive director of Artpolis, had brought us something unexpected: the wonderfully unruly Cabaret biZ’arT.
From the first moments, Jonah Katz, Laurie Roger and Rémi Bombled made us part of the performance. They spoke to us, played with our expectations and turned the theatre into a place where anything might happen. Magic gave way to mind reading, boxing, acrobatics, dance and glorious physical comedy. Every movement seemed spontaneous, yet the timing was superb. They could send the audience into laughter with a glance, a gesture or a sudden change of direction.
Cirk biZ’arT is a French-American contemporary circus company based in Marseille. Its performers brought extraordinary skill to Dodona, but what impressed me most was their connection with the audience. A few Albanian words and a playful double-headed eagle gesture drew warm recognition. Their improvisation felt natural, generous and alive to the room around them.
They also dared to go where laughter is sometimes difficult. Through flirtation, political satire and irreverent humor, they touched on sexuality, violence and other sensitive subjects. At times they seemed to apologize for making us uncomfortable, then invited us to laugh again. Their boldness was matched by intelligence and warmth. Even the most unconventional moments became part of a shared celebration.
This was an inspired opening for a festival whose theme is Embracing the Unknown. For an hour, we did just that. We let go of knowing what would come next and followed three remarkable artists wherever their imagination took us. Their command of circus, clowning and audience interaction was exceptional. More than a display of talent, it was a performance with courage, precision and heart.
The applause at the end was long and richly deserved. The cast thanked Artpolis, Dodona Theatre and everyone who had welcomed them to FemArt. Afterward, the joy carried into the gathering, where people continued sharing their favorite moments.
